2026 Prescription Charges

Nowadays, when I have a conversation in the street with someone, it goes a bit like this: “Hiya, how are you?” “I’m well, thanks, but did you hear about Rupert/Ted/Alison/Indira? She/he had a heart attack/has cancer/had a stroke (and so on)”. Obviously, it’s not always that style of conversation. Sometimes the answer is “Not so good”, because the person I’m talking to has just had a bypass/major surgery/has metastasis (and so on). It can be worse - “Did you hear about Betty? -  she died, you know”.

Bearing this in mind, a news item from today may be of interest to lots of us, particularly those of us of a certain age, closer to the “time of reckoning”. As of today, there are new prescription charges. These charges only apply to people with prescriptions from the Spanish state system. If your prescription comes from a private doctor, then the charges will depend on the market price.

The charges apply directly across the state health system, be that in Murcia, Valencia, or anywhere else in Spain.

Prior to today, active workers had no monthly caps. Now, lower and middle-income workers are protected from high pharmacy bills.

Copay means that you pay a percentage of the cost of the medication - for instance if your prescribed tablets are priced at 15€ and the copay is 10% then you would pay 1.50€. Once you reach the monthly cap there is no more to pay. The percentage contribution remain largely unchanged. but a new intermediate bracket has been added to the pensioners prices to reduce the monthly cap for middle-income retirees. It's now 13.37€ down from 18.52€

There are also payment exemptions for those people receiving the Minimum Wage (Ingreso Mínimo Vital), non-contributory pensions, or the unemployed who have exhausted their benefits.

Your individual prescription bracket is tied directly to your tax data. In the Valencian Community (and presumably in other areas), the health system automatically updates these limits on your digital medical profile. When you present your medical card (SIP in Valencia) at any pharmacy starting today, the new caps and percentages will automatically apply.
